Venting and Letting It Go

As a lifetime partner with my hubby and caregiver for my two dogs, I deal with a lot of “stuff”; but this post isn’t about the dogs. It’s not even about my hubby. It’s about human specialized medical practices.

And, as the title of this post suggests, I’m just going to vent my frustrations and then let them go.

My main frustration is with the power that hospital systems have over doctors and their ability to meet their patients’ special needs. And then there’s the frustration with doctors who take it personally when their patients refuse referral to another specialist 200 miles away just because of their particular hospital affiliation.

That recently happened to us (a second time) this past week. Hubby’s gastroenterologist wants him to see a specialist 200 miles away. We explained to him – as politely as we could – that we cannot and will not travel that far. We are not about to inflict the physical, mental, emotional and financial hardships upon ourselves that would come with such travel. Surely there are other esophageal specialists much closer to home to whom he could refer us. Despite our refusal, this doctor – who has been treating hubby’s gastric issues for a minimum of 15 years – has his office set up an appointment with said specialist. When we received the appointment notice, we called the local doctor and told his nurse, in no uncertain terms, that we are NOT traveling 200 miles to see said specialist. A few days later, the nurse called back and said that the doctor was referring us back to our primary care physician for this and all future gastroenterology issues. In other words, unless you go see the specialist affiliated with our hospital, you are no longer our patient.

Whatever happened to compassion and working with the patient to assure that all his/her needs are met, including the emotional needs that go hand-in-hand with the medical needs?? Apparently, the Hippocratic oath they all take – or at least used to take – does not count for s**t any more when they sign an affiliation contract with a particular hospital system.

Okay, so I’ve vented my frustrations with the medical care system in this country. Now it’s time to let it go. Thanks for letting me bend your ear for a few minutes.

I Love Our Vet!

Yes, I know I’ve said before that I love our vet, but I’m saying it again. I Love Our Vet!

Not just because he has always taken good care of our pets; but also because he has always been honest and forthright on all fronts.

Not just because he let me do my externship (for my vet assistant course) at his hospital; but also because he has always been there for us (just a call or text away) from the time Ducky started presenting IBD symptoms, throughout Callie’s lymphoma journey, and every day since.

You might recall in my last post, Happy 13th Birthday, Shadow, I mentioned that thanks to her little sister Shadow had taken a tumble a couple of weeks ago. Thanks to the hemp oil gel caps and elixir drops and daily walks on the treadmill, the tumble didn’t seem to bother her then.

Still, over the last 10 days, she seemed to be struggling more to stand up and stay up. And she hasn’t been eating as well or as much, plus her reflux seems to bother her more often again. So, I brought Shadow back to Dr. Steve for his professional opinion on Tuesday morning. I mentioned that with her increased struggling of late I was worried that maybe she was in more pain than she let on. He put my mind at ease. “No injury. Just her arthritis flaring a little.”

I sent Doc a video of Shadow walking on the treadmill yesterday morning; and when he called in the afternoon with the lab results he commented on the video. “She looks great. She walks like an older dog with some arthritis. Her range of motion isn’t what it used to be, but it’s pretty good for an old lady.” As for the blood work and urinalysis, everything is close to or at normal levels, which means the Denamarin is working. We talked about some other minor concerns; but all’s well. The Gabapentin, hemp oil, and treadmill – and outdoor playtime – is keeping her arthritis manageable. So, we’re sticking with what works.

Now it’s time to get back to working on my final exam. It’s due back to my program manager on the 30th, so I probably won’t publish another post before Halloween.

Happy Thankful Thursday!!!

Our First Reviews, Part 2

#ChewyInfluencer

Well, here we are again. As I told you in Part 1, we decided to try two products for the March review. For “Part 2”, I was looking for a treat that I could give Shadow that wouldn’t aggravate her reflux issues. Through trial and error – and a lot of experimenting – I have found that she has the least trouble with soft treats without grains. But she misses the hard treats that she has to chew in order to savor and really enjoy.

I wanted to find a grain-free, made-in-the-USA treat that she could really enjoy. So when I found the Fromm Four-Star Nutritionals Grain-Free Parmesan Cheese Recipe Dog Treats, I figured they were worth a try. So, this is how they’re packaged:

The product description reads as follows:

“A grain-free gourmet treat, oven-baked with fresh Wisconsin parmesan cheese, vegetables, and a touch of oregano.”

Key Benefits:

Grain-free

Wisconsin parmesan

Fresh vegetables and fruit

100% USDA-inspected ingredients

Made in Wisconsin in a USDA plant

These treats are about the size of a quarter and hard as a rock, but my girls don’t care. They crunch away and “vacuum” up the crumbs likety-split. (So fast I couldn’t even get a picture of my slower eater, Shadow.)  I took a couple of the treats out of the bag and took a picture of them. They actually look pretty tasty to me as dog treats go …

The very best part? They DO NOT aggravate Shadow’s reflux! I’ve given her several of these treats over the past week and she hasn’t made that god awful sound she makes when the reflux is acting up on her. (And Ducky, my canine “Life Cereal Kid who eats anything” likes them too.)

Have you tried Fromm’s Four-Star Nutritionals dog treats? Head over to Chewy.com and get some for your dog.

Disclaimer: As a Chewy Influencer, I received one bag of Fromm Four-Star Nutritionals Grain-Free Parmesan Cheese Recipe Dog Treats from Chewy.com in exchange for an honest review. I received no other compensation for this post.
