Thunderstorms

A thunderstorm woke me up at 2:15 this morning. Normally I sleep right through them now that Callie is in heaven. This one was different.

I’ve been opening the bedroom window at night these past several nights and letting the cool air in. But when I awoke to the storm, Shadow was pacing in the small space between the bed and the bookshelf that sits on the floor beneath the window.

Shadow has never been afraid of thunderstorms before; but she was definitely uncomfortable earlier. So, half asleep, I got out of bed and closed the window.  That helped a little, but she was still upset. I invited her up on the bed, and after a momentary hesitation she jumped up.

Meanwhile, we got a loud clap of thunder and Ducky barked at it. I smiled in the darkness and she stopped. But Shadow moved closer to me. I turned on to my side and put my arm over her shoulders. After a few minutes she finally let out a deep sigh and relaxed.

The storm ended about half an hour later, but my sweet Golden baby is still on the bed even now. She’s fast asleep. And I’m wide awake, though yawning as I type this post. I’m glad she feels safe at my side; but I wonder what it was about this storm that made her feel so uncomfortable?  And what was it about this storm that woke me up? Maybe in my sleepy state I felt Shadow’s discomfort and knew she needed my reassurance that all was well?

Those extreme negative ions can vex even the most unflappable peeps and pups. Poor sweet Shadow…hopefully she’s totally back to normal. Could it be that Ms. Callie is moving furniture around in heaven? πŸ™‚

So sweet that Shadow feels so good in your arms. Such comfort you bring her and she brings you. I love to sleep with Miss Cocoa right by my side!!

I bet you did sense that and that’s why you woke up. All of the crew here hates thunderstorms, but none quite as bad as our golden Moses. He was petrified of them. The girls just get a bit nervous and Luke just takes himself to what he considers a safe place. Here at the new house it seems to be behind our bedroom door on a bed I put there.
Yesterday we got a brief thunderstorm – unusual here so early! I ran and got everyone’s calming collars but by the time I got them on them all it was pretty much over! So much for testing them to see if they worked for that. They did all settle down immediately though!

Poor Callie used to try to crawl inside the headboard of my bed at night. Bless her heart. During the day she would try to hide between my legs or climb into my lap. Shadow usually just ignored the storms or sat closer to me. Maybe the fact that the window was open and the storm was so close is what made her uncomfortable? As soon as I closed the window and invited her up on the bed, she started to relax a bit.

Nothing is so bad if you have someone to comfort you. Glad you were there for Shadow.

Honey’s not usually bothered by storms either. But she has reacted a couple of times. I suspect she knows something we don’t.

    Glad you all were safe.
